Jessie's Baby Shower

My cousin Jessie is having a baby :)
It's A Boy!
We are so excited for her. On Halloween morning she had a baby shower and I offered to make a cake for it. After some complications *I'll explain those later* we made it to the shower about an hour late. I felt so embarrassed.

So Friday night I worked on this cake until 4am. I was pretty awake too! I wasn't getting tired at all. Plus Justin had friends over until about 3 haha! Yeah we're crazy. So I climbed into bed at about 4 am and set my alarm for 8am so i could get up and finalize the cake and leave my house by 10am so we could be there at 11am when the shower started.
Saturday morning I wake up completely panicked. I vaguely remember my alarm going off, but I must have been so tired I turned it off. I jumped out of bed frantically at 9:30 knowing I only had a half hour to get EVERYTHING done for the cake, shower and get ready... Yeah right. Not happening. I was so upset at myself. So then a few minutes after I wake up my mom calls me. For Jessie's gift we were making her burp cloths, Binky clips and a blanket. Mom and I together finished the burp cloths and Binky clips and the mom said she was going to finish the blanket Friday night while I worked on the cake. This is what mom said:

"Um, I didn't finish the blanket because I'm lame. I apparently don't know how to line up fabric and sew a straight line."

My heart dropped. I took sewing for 3 years and yes my mom DOES know how to sew seams. That's all this was. I knew I wouldn't be able to get it all done. I felt so bad. So the blanket had to wait. I finished the cake, we tied the burp cloths and Binky clips with a cute ribbon and we were walking out the door at about 11am. Which was when the party started. And we had to drive out to South Jordan which was a 30-45 minute drive.

So I'm walking out of my house with the finished cake in my hands and i totally smeared the writing BOY across my chest. I was so upset. It looked so cute and I screwed it up. I should have stuck with fondant letters instead of buttercream. So you can really tell I messed the letters up.
This baby was my favorite! It was so fun to mold all the little fingers, the ear, and hair :o) He's too cute, isn't he?
I love the buttons for the border. Those were fun!
Jessie's Aunt made all this food! It was amazing!
A few minutes after we were all done eating and just chatting in the front room I see this little boy, probably Jessie's cousin, climbing up onto a stool and onto the bar. I think I was the only one watching him do this, but it was like slow motion, he reached forward and just DUG his whole hand into the side of the cake, right between the bottle and rattle. I just snickered and let it be. Only seconds after it happened his mom saw him. It was so cute. But i figured we were only going to eat it anyway and we had already gotten pictures and stuff :o)
Jessie!
So we get to the party and all my cousins are dressed up as pregnant women! HAHA! I love my cousins! Jessie (in black) is the only one who is pregnant, although Katie (in pink) is married too :o)
Lucy, Jeneil, Aunt Leah, Olivia, and Me
Jessie and her sister Lucy
This is Courtney, She looks so cute, holding her pregnant belly and everything! Haha!
This is Katie. She is married to Jessie's Brother, Clancy. Doesn't she look adorable!
Sisters, all dressed up!

Here's the trick to their pregnant belly's! What a good Idea!

Anyway, It was a great party, and the cake was so fun. I am excited to create my next baby shower cake.

I'll also be posting the pictures of the cake on my cake blog!

Baseball Cake & A Trip to the ER

Well... Here's one for the books!

Last week my good friend Lindsay asked me to make a birthday cake for her husbands birthday which was yesterday. We came up with the idea to do a baseball themed cake, and they wanted a devils food cake with oreo filling. So Monday night I baked the cakes, Tuesday I made the filling and the buttercream icing and last night I got off work an hour early so I could come home and put it all together.
Everything started out great I got the layers put together and sculpted the base of the cake with a knife that we got for our wedding 2 years ago but that I used for the first time last night. I shaped it to look like home plate. Then I iced it with an Ivory/Tan colored buttercream.
Then I placed the half baseball on, which was also chocolate cake just baked in a glass bowl to form the shape. I iced the baseball with white buttercream then put the bead border on in red buttercream.
Next I needed to write "Happy Birthday Justin" and put the laces on the baseball... Well here's where things went wrong....

It was 7:15pm and we were suppose to meet at Texas Roadhouse for Justin's birthday dinner at 7:00. We were already 15 minutes late so as you can imagine I was in a hurry and needed a tip that was in one of my piping bags. So on the table was that same knife I used to sculpt the cake and so I thought "Oh i could use this knife to cut the tip out of this bag" Well there I stood holding the piping bag in my left hand, picked up the knife and quickly cut the tip out of the piping bag without even thinking first. Well knives are sharp, they CUT, duh right??? So I ended up cutting right into my left middle finger. STUPID I KNOW!!

I knew immediately, I didn't even have to pause and look at the wound before I knew I needed stitches. So i grabbed a paper towel wrapped it around my finger and ran into the other room. I had to wake Justin up from his nap by frantically yelling "Justin I cut my finger, we need to go to the hospital NOW!" Justin was up within seconds ans took a look at the cut and said "Yep, let's go." So within less than 5 minutes we were at the ER in Lakeview hospital.

Luckily our insurance started with my work YESTERDAY... Lucky, Lucky, Lucky!
Let me just tell you how bad the pain was when the nurse put the numbing shot directly into the wound! I think I cut off the circulation in my husbands hand... It burned SO bad. But after the numbing medicine was in, I couldn't feel a thing. So 5 stitches later I was headed home to write happy birthday and put the laces on the baseball so I could take this cake over to the party.

It was not easy piping with a gimpy hand... Luckily it is my left hand, but it is still a challenge. You can tell the letters aren't that great

So in the end, the cake got MOSTLY done (I wanted to do more decorations and stuff) and we made it to the party, but missed dinner (which is the part I was looking forward to the most). I was pleased with the cake considering my injury.

I'm glad Lindsay asked me to make this cake! It was fun making the cake... but not so much the stitches part :o) But the doctor and nurse that helped me we very nice and very funny! The nurse has only been a nurse for 1 month!! Crazy, but he did a good job and was very kind. He is also a part time firefighter/paramedic (so it didn't make me nervous).
I think I might take a small break from making cakes... don't worry, not long though! I can only type with my pinky and ring finger on my left hand since my middle and pointer fingers are bandaged together right now. It's very interesting so if there are spelling errors, I do apologize!

Well until our next cake! See you then!

Course 2 final cake

Last night I had the final lesson for Course 2 of Wilton cake decorating. We learned the basket weave and actually it was easier than it looks! Then during the course we learned how to make all sorts of different flowers made out of royal icing. Royal icing, for example, is the stuff that you can buy at the store that say {H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y} on it and you peel them off individually and put them on the cake, and they are edible. Same thing..

Melissa and her final cake! So she did a great job!

Stephanie's final cake! So Pretty!
My brother-in-law's 19th birthday was Saturday the 22nd and he LOVES BYU. If you ever see a blue sports car driving around with 2 BYU flags on both sides of the windows, That's Him! I'm OK with this cause I'm a BYU fan also. So I asked my teacher if instead of putting flowers on it that i make it into a BYU cake for Kevin's birthday. She said that it would be fine as long as she saw that I had made all my flowers and color flow birds and If i put the basket weave on the cake. So this is how it turned out... I know it's not perfect, but hey, it's the first basket weave I've ever done!

After class I had to go home and add a Y to the cake. So i cut out a template out of paper, laid it on my rolled out fondant then cut it out. Then i put it on my cake and outlined it with the rest of my blue frosting. I started running out as i was outlining it so it kept sputtering, stupid frosting! Oh well, Kevin LOVED it!

GO BYU!
For this cake I wanted to try something different than just white cake. So i made a chocolate devils food cake and then put an Oreo filling in the middle, it was SO delicious! Yum! I will definitely be making this cake again!

Here's my piece of cake, I accidentally took a bite before I took a picture! And i wish now that i would have gotten a picture of Kevin.

Well, I've officially passed Course 2... Now onto Course 3 - Fondant & Gum Paste!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KEVIN!
